The scene is like something from a Fellini movie. Jolene has been rushed through the pre-op procedure and is now lying on her back on the surgical table inside the facility operating room. Her legs are spread, her feet positioned inside stainless steel stirrups. She’s not entirely under anesthesia sedation yet, and Fat Elvis is standing at the foot of the table singing what she claims is her favorite song. Her and Lester’s favorite song, in fact.

“Love me tender, love me true . . .”

Every one of the surviving hostages has been pulled into the operating room so Lester can keep an eye on them and so they don’t attempt escape. Meanwhile, Lester is still streaming the whole thing live on Facebook.

Located at the very top of the operating room’s far wall is a series of wall-length mirrors that access the observation room. The windows are somewhat tinted but not enough so I can’t make out the SWAT team that’s now slowly filling the space in their black tactical gear. No one else notices them because all eyes are glued to the table and its patient, Jolene.

While the bearded Dr. David brings a scalpel to the now completely sedated Jolene’s mid-section, I back-step from the table, and slowly make my way around the anesthesiologist to where a captivated Lester stands, his smartphone gripped in hand. Only when Dr. Katherine, who is assisting Dr. Dave, happens to look up at the observation window, do I realize that she, too, knows full well the D-Day that’s about to erupt. But that’s also when I slowly bring my index finger up to my lips, as if to say, Don’t say a word. This is our only chance to get everyone out of this alive.

She shifts her eyes back to the operating table as Dr. Dave makes an incision in and around Jolene’s manhood. It’s something that’s so instinctively disturbing to me that I immediately avert my eyes. Lester, on the other hand, is so enthralled with the cutting, that I can feel the excitement oozing off of his small frame.

“Won’t be long now, honey,” he says, “and you’ll be my girl inside and out.”

The little man isn’t finished speaking for more than a moment when his mouth slowly opens, and he makes that tell-tale “Ahhhh . . . ahhhhh . . .” noise and I know he’s about to sneeze. Here’s what I also know: If SWAT breaks through the glass and invades the operation, Lester will have ample time to retrieve the Browning stored in his pant waist and shoot more hostages. What all this means, of course, is that I must neutralize Lester prior to their jumping onto the scene.

He sneezes.

The hostages surrounding the table jump, they’re so on edge.

That’s my cue to reach for the gun, pull it out of his pants, turn the barrel on him. He turns to me quickly, surprise painting his snot-nosed face under those horn-rimmed eyeglasses.

“Hey,” he says, a beat before I come down on his head hard with the Browning barrel.
